Lilly pads on Jack Lake.

Mergansers fishing in a small bay behind camp.

I was sitting along the shoreline under a cedar tree
reading when this family of Mergansers swam right
in front of me.  I watched them chase fish in the
bay for 30 minutes before they continued on
around the point.
Sunset on Cherokee Lake.
Otter in Smoke Lake.

Never before on a Boundary Waters trip has
the weather been better.  One hour of rain in a
9 day period!  The first half was hot and
included lots of swimming.  The second half
was cooler and involved lots of portaging.

The journey started at the Sawbill Lake entry
point.  With the relaxed pace we set for
ourselves, it took 4 days to reach the
northern-most point of our loop; North
Temperance Lake.  We then slowly made our
way down the Temperance River flowage and
west across the "fire" lakes back to Sawbill
Lake.

Great weather, decent fishing, and an up-close
wildlife encounter made this a very memorable
trip!
The Loons filled the air with their calls
everywhere we camped this year.

We watched as different groups of
loons would meet and swim circles
around each other as if to say hello.
